Vopnafjördur

Vopnafjörður fjord extends inland with lowland shores to the north and a tall and rugged mountain range to the south. It is considerably greener than most fjords in the north and is renowned for its beauty and temperate climate. The lowland, also named Vopnafjörður, is divided in into three valleys: Hofsdalur to the south, Vesturárdalur in the center and Selárdalur in the north. The three rivers that flow along those valleys are among the best salmon-fishing rivers in the county, regularly attracting such well-known patrons as Charles, Prince of Wales.

The town of Vopnafjörður is a fishing port and a service center for the surrounding farm district. The farm and folk museum at Bustarfell in Hofsárdalur valley is one of Iceland’s best-kept and most beautiful traditional turf farmhouses. 

On top of the cliffs, next to the main road, a panoramic viewpoint may be found.

The nearby Mt. Hellisheiði has one of the most awesome mountain roads in the country; narrow with steep gradients and hairpin bends. It should not be attempted in bad road conditions, but in fine weather it offers spectacular views the entire way.

The small but comfortable, Hotel Tangi in Vopnafjörður offers good service and delicious local cuisine. The hotel staff organize cruises around the fjord, offering guests a unique opportunity to observe a variety of birds, seals and even whales. They can also arrange for fishing excursions and other recreational activities on request.

Similarly, the nearby farms Vatnsdalsgerði and Syðri-Vík offer accommodation and various leisure activities.
