Reykhólahreppur |
Reykhólahreppur is the most southerly community in the Westfjords area in the north-west part of Iceland. The Westfjords are joined to the mainland only by a fairly narrow and low bridge of land between Bitrufjörður fjord to the east and Gilsfjörður fjord to the west. This bridge is 7 kilometres across and 260m above sea level at its highest mountain pass. The Westfjords themselves are cut with fjords and the coast is roughly 2500 km long in total.
Reykhólahreppur created with the affiliation of the five former communities at the north side of the Breiðafjörður bay.
To the south, the boundary of the area is at the head of Gilsfjörður fjord, to Kjálkafjörður in the west. There are 13 fjords in this community and hundreds of islands, among them Flatey often called the pearl of Breiðafjörður. The shore is fascinating and no wonder as 25% of Iceland coast lies inside the community. The highlands of the area are flat and fairly barren, although the large boulders in the landscape hide a variety of mosses and other small plant life. The highest mountains in the area are the Reiphjólsfjöll, standing 970 meters high.
The community centre is at Reykhólar, with a health care centre, a shop and swimming pool. It is also famous for its Kelp factory. Reykhólar offers a variety of hiking trails and the landscape is beautiful.
