Husavik |
In the "Book of Settlement" (Landnáma) there is a narrative about a Swedish viking, Garðar Svavarsson and his jorney to Iceland. Garðar circumnavigated the land and found it was an island. He named it "Garðarsholm" or Island of Garðar. When in Skjálfandi Bay, Garðar put out a boat carrying one of his crew, Náttfari, with a slave and a "bonded" woman. The boat was set adrift and came ashore at Náttfaravík where they made their home. Garðar though, landed the other side of the fjord and spent the winter at Husavik (House Bay). The following summer Garðar sailed back east to Norway with glowing reports of the island he had found.
The country surrounding Husavik is known for it's natural wonders and beautiful landscape. Centrally located Husavik offers the traveller an ideal base for tours to Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss and all the other wonders of the local countryside.
Being the Whale watching capital of Iceland, Husavik offers you the chance to visit the only whale center in Iceland. The whale center is a rare chance to see the history of whales around Iceland as well as demonstrating the unbelievable variety of whales that live around Iceland. The whale watching boats go out several times a day and the chances of spotting whales are excellent.
