Hanko

Both nature and culture evoke the history of Hanko. The town is situated at the very end of Cape Hanko, bordering on the sea on three sides. Over the centuries, Hanko has been the scene of dramatic events in both peace and war.

The oldest surviving monuments of war are fortifications from the late 18th century, the most recent are Second World War fortifications from 1941.
Over the years Hanko has in turn been a coastal defence point, a port of departure for thousands of emigrants and a seaside resort. Today, Hanko is a busy port and important to Finnish industry.

In summer, Hanko is very popular port of call to yachts and pleasure craft. The town has a charm of it’s own that appeals to yachtsmen and overland visitors alike. The common interest lies in a comprehensive range of recreational events.

There is a Coastguard station in Tulliniemi of Hangö with passport control and Customs clearance. Two Customs channels approach the station from the open sea. One is the 13.0 m deep Hanko/Hangö channel beginning from the rand mark Hanko 1 from the Southeast of Russarö. The other channel begins due south from Russarö. Hankoniemi has always had strategic importance in the surveillance of the sea routes in the Gulf of Finland. Many trade and war vessels have made their way through it during last millennium.

Hauensuoli is a fascinating historical monument. Opposite to Tulliniemi a group of small islands forms an old moorage. Traders and sailors waiting for favourable winds have engraved different coats of arms on the rocks. The oldest ones date back to the 1400's. Among the engravings there are the coats of arms of Kings Erik XIV, John III, and Gustavus III.
