Haapasaari (Aspö)

Far out in the outer skerries, outside Hamina, yor find Haapasaari. The island has an protected haven. There ar also a border guard post that can be called on depart to or arrival from Russia.
An alternative place for clearence is situated close to the mainland at Santio.
A fairway passes close to the island. To the south of the island there is a navigable sound, and here is also the inlet to the haven located. It has a depth of 2,2m. The guest harbour is situated at the border guard jetty close to the church.

History

The old Viking sailing route has passed via Aspö already during war times. Aspö is known for many reasons. In the 1910s, the island was a Russian guard post and in the 1940s, it was a submarine harbour which was closed off with large nets. The present chapel on the island was built in 1955-56. The chapels which preceeded it were referred to already during the middle ages.

Along the new nature trail you can become acquainted with the riches of nature, and from the rocks you can see all the way to the neighbouring island. There are ten inhabitants who live all the year round on the island. For groups, the inhabitants of Aspö offer island delicacies, tours and boat trips. The musical tradition is preserved on the island. Accordion playing is an essential part of summertime. On the beach, there is a guest pier ready for usage. The connection ferry Aspö travels to and from the island all the year round
