Sailing in Greece

The people in the archipelagoes of Greece are very friendly and they always come to help when docking. The port authorities are also very helpful even if sometimes they will come to check papers of the boat when you are docked or when you are with anchor off in bay or even rarely when you are sailing. Yacht clubs will give you all the information you need for the island. (where are the best beaches, who cooks best, supplies for the boat and some of them they even have an open channel in VHF for continuous support in case of emergency.

In Marinas you will find a listing of marinas by island. Shelter indicates how much you are protected from all possible wind directions.

Information about mooring can be found in the Greek Waters pilot. However in most islands you dock with stern or bows to.

In the Aegean, be very careful with the hydrofoils. Because of their high speed, they suddenly may come out of a strait, a point, or a narrow channel, and slow boats like ours might not have the necessary speed to manoeuvre and avoid them. Therefore be sure that when approaching and before getting in a restricted area that you are at a safe distance, so that you have a good visibility of the situation. (8-98)

'It is less windy in the Ionian archipelago than in the Aegean. There are a lot more sailing boats. One morning we counted 20 sails; it looked like we were in a regatta. (8-98)'
