Virtsu is located on the island of the same name, which integrated with the mainland during the last century. First mentioned in 1459 and later developed into a market town, it is characterized mainly by its harbour and fishing industry. By the sea, about 200 m from the Tallinn-Virtsu highway, there are ruins of a feudal castle of the Uexküll lineage that was built in 1465 and was destroyed in 1534 - "the Virtsu old Town".
