Saaremaa in Estonia

The largest Estonian island is Saaremaa. Its area is 2700 km². Saaremaa together with Muhu, Abruka, Vilsandi, Ruhnu and other small islands and islets make up Saaremaa county. Population is 38 000. Saaremaa and Muhumaa are connected with each other with 3.6 km long damway.

About 2 000 years B.C. hunters and fishermen who used implements made of stone and bone lived on a much more smaller Saaremaa.

Thanks to their advanced agriculture, trading and dense population and central position, the islanders became a weighty power in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea in 11-12th century.

Ancient fight for freedom in the 13th century gives a special fame and glory to Saaremaa. Saaremaa's old and architectually very original churches are the witnesses of the followed Christianization.

Saaremaa's coastline is well indented by several peninsulas, the largest of which is 32 km long Sõrve, and by deeply into the continent penetrating sounds.

Limestones and dolomites which form the island's bedrock display cliffs or banks in some places (the highest bank is Panga pank - 21.3 m). Saaremaa's landscape is flat, the highest point - Viidu Raunamägi - is only 54 m above the sea level. Most visited nature memorial is the group of Kaali meteorite craters.

Due to sea climate and variety of soil Saaremaa has got great variety of plants - 4/5 species of the plants growing in Estonia grow there. 44 percent of the territory of Saaremaa is under the woods.

In ancient villages the buildings with reed roofs are surrounded with stone-fences. Old trestle-mills, beautiful national costumes and original vernacular are still existing. Kuressaare Episcopal Castle - present location of Saaremaa's museum is the best known from the numerous historical memorials of the island.

The only town in Saaremaa, Kuressaare (till 1917 Arensburg) is known for its beautiful old town and curative muds.

To get to Saaremaa you need to take a ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu harbour in Muhu and then through Muhumaa and along the damway of Väike väin (or Est.Small Sound) by car. In winter you can travel to Saaremaa by airplane from Tallinn two times a week. In summer there is a ferry connection with Hiiumaa from Triigi harbour.
