Pirita in Estonia |
Pirita is a part of Tallinn, 5-7 km to the north-east of the city center, by the bay of Tallinn. This is a garden city. Adjacent, are a 2-kilometer-long beach, a park-like pine grove and the protected pictureresque magnificent ruins of a 15th century convent. At the beginning of this century Pirita began to turn into an outing and recreation place with a wonderful sand beach. For the Olympic Regatta of 1980, a large yacht harbour with all necessary facilities and a hotel were built. At present the harbour buildings house a shopping mall and several offices.
The Kalev Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respectable clubs of its kind in Estonia. Kalev's yachtsmen have won three Olympic medals (in 1960, Aleksander Tchutchelov in FINN-class in 1988 and 1992 Toomas and Tõnu Tõniste in 470 class). Three world champion titles have been received in DN-class ice-boat sailing. From yacht club's jetty, visitors will get a magnificent view of the ruins of St. Brigit's convent (constructed 1407-1436, destroyed in the Livonian War 1577). Tallinn is rich in beautiful sights, providing unforgettable experiences and memories.
