Kihnu in Estonia

Kihnu is situated in Pärnu county and it makes up an independent commune. Its area is 16.4 km2 and it is the seventh island in Estonia by size. The nearest point from the mainland is 12 km. Its population is 518.

There are 4 villages on the island: Linaküla, Rootsiküla, Sääreküla and Lemsi. There is a school, a churh, a local lore museum, a village hall and a hospital. There is a harbour, fishering industry in Lemsi, lighthouse, weather-station and the birthplace of the most famous man from Kihnu - Kihnu Jõnn in Rootsiküla, who is memorized with the memorial stone. The county government, post office and the airport are situated in Sääreküla.

One of the Kihnu's sights is a lighthouse that is built up here from the details which were made in England and that has been in the service of the seamen for more than 130 years.

Kihnu's coasts are low, rich in stones. The best beaches are Piälrand and Silmi ninä. Some of the sights you can find among the local lore museum's expositions. Kihnu's Orthodoxy church maintains the value of preservation of antiques.

You can travel to Kihnu by ship from Munalaiu harbour and during the autumn and winter periods by airplane from Pärnu. In winter when there's an iceway you can get to the island by car and snowmobile, too.

Outside Parnu, in NW, you find the island Kihnu. It is a local harbour requiring a major overhaul. Vessels can enter the harbour by a lighted lane. Exposed to N, NE and E winds. Depth at mooring 2.8 m. Mooring to hull. Guards on duty around the clock. Sauna with reservation. Toilet. Bar. Telephone. Post office, stores, bars 2 km.
