Hiiumaa (Dagö) in Estonia

Hiiumaa island is the second, by size, among all the others. Its area is 1024 km². The shortest distance from the mainland is 22 km. Population is 12 000.

Hiiumaa - the sagas' Dagaithi - emerged as a small islet from the sea more than 10 000 years ago. First of all Kõpu peninsula emerged. The Highest point (68.5 m above the sea level) is in Kõpu. Hiiumaa extends for 60 km along the West-East axis and for 40 km along the North-South axis and the longtitude of the coastline is 325 km.

Hiiumaa's surrounding is rich in islets and occasionally emerging reefs, altogether about 200 of them. The waters are shallow near the coast, Hiiumaa's best-known reef is in the north-west.

Hiiumaa was mentioned for the first time as an  uninhabited island in old historical records in 1228. Significant population began at the end of the 13th century or at the beginning of the 14th century. Since 1563 the island belonged to Sweden and since this time the island has its Swedish name Dagö. For long period of time the Northern and Western Hiiumaa were populated by the Swedes, but according to Katariina II, the Russian emperess's ukase in the year 1781, about 1200 Hiiumaa's Swedes were deported to the shores of the Dnieper. The Swedish villages Malvaste, Mudaste, Kodeste, Kidaste, Tahkuna and Reigi were left unpopulated and afterwards the Estonians settled there.

It is tried to classify the Hiiu's people. You can count up to 40 different "types" of them: kohvilähkrid, vandiraiujad, odratolgused, pätakavallamehed, tõrvakõplased, ehthiidlased, hobuhiidlased, märahiidased, hapupiimalähkrid, oosiplased, hundijölkajad and others (quite untranslatable names, here are some of them in word for word: coffee-kegs, rope-cutters, barley-blockheads, true-hiids, horse-hiids, sour-milk-kegs).

Hiiumaa has a ferry connection between Heltermaa harbour and Rohuküla harbour on the mainland. In summer there is a ferry connection between Sõru harbour and Triigi harbour in Saaremaa.
