Haapsalu (Hapsal) is situated at the Estonian mainland, opposite Hiiumaa (Dagö) and the "Swede-island" Vormsi (Ormsö). In Haapsalu you feel the spirit of a small town, but if you look careful, you can also discover a medieval street pattern!

Haapsalu is nestled between bays. For this reason it has frequently been compared to Venice. The Bishop of Saaremaa and Western Estonia, who in 1265 established his cathedral and seat here, had also seen the natural potential of Haapsalu as a harbour. From the windows of the church in the stronghold one can on moonlit nights, around August 8-20, still see an apparation - the White Lady. City rights from 1279. Known as a health resort, the first facility for mud baths was established in 1825. Haapsalu was the childhood home of the composer Rudolf Tobias. A memorial bench commemorates the stay in Haapsalu of another famous composer - Peter Tchaikovsky. Today Haapsalu, a home to 14,000 people, wants to reestablish itself as a health resort.

Today, Haapsalu is best known for its healing mud, but the history of Haapsalu dates back to 1279, when it was chartered and became the centre of Saare-Lääne Bishopric for the next 300 years. Those early days remain today with the Episcopal castle with the biggest single-nave cathedral in the Baltic states - a tourist attraction and a place for concerts and events of all kinds.

The curative effect of the sea mud had been known by locals for a long time when a military doctor, Carl Abraham Hunnius, founded the first mud cure resort in 1825. News of the curative mud quickly reached the aristocracy of St. Petersburg. Ever since then, Haapsalu has been a popular summer paradise where people from all around the world can get the medical treatment they need. Today, there are three mud cure establishments in Haapsalu.

In the 19th century, Haapsalu became famous for its shawls - a delicate handcraft made by local women.
