National Parks and Nature Reserves

Estonian National Parks

To tell someone to ‘bug off’ in Estonian, you can tell him or her to ‘go to the woods’ (‘mine metsa’). Ironically enough, the country’s forests are part of a beloved natural heritage for most Estonians, many of whom will be spending the better part of the summer out ‘in nature’. The nation’s deep respect for this heritage was proven in 1971, when Lahemaa became the first national park in the Soviet Union. Three more parks were dedicated 1993, while a dozen other areas have been named nature reserves. Most of these areas offer guide services and accommodation - from tent sites to a room in a manor house.
