Gubal Island

Gubal Island is located on the south side of the Straits of Gubal. The island is just one of an archipelago that reach from the Egyptian mainland south to Hurghada. There is a protected bay on the south side of the island that is a safe mooring site and is also an exciting dive site.

Diving at night here is excellent, primarily in the mooring area. There is a tidal shelf that slopes down to the bottom of the bay. The shelf is covered with reef fish and marine invertebrates. There are large mollusks, like the Triton's trumpet that come out at night and show their mantels as they travel along the reef looking for their favorite meal, the crown-of-thorns starfish.

During the day, the wall that stretches from the bay into the Straits of Gubal is amazing. There are many open ocean fish and lots of dolphins that swim up to the divers to get a good look at them. This area is a drift dive and you need to take care not to get carried away from the boat and the group.

The typical depth range of Gubal Island is 10 to 120 feet and is best accessed by a boat dive or local guide. The expertise required is a novice with an instructor, advanced, dive master or instructor.
