This "banana" shaped island has a very small harbour built at the end of a long dam. The island itself is a nice place, with very special nature at the N-end. Late afternoon you will meet a lot of wild rabbits crossing the walkway along the coast. When approaching Endelave from the North, you will often see on your starboard side a lot of Seals, in the protected sanctuary "Møllegrunden". If the sea is calm, you will very often see "Porpoises" (a 1.5 m. Whale). They are not Dolphins, but still an attraction in Denmark.

The dream of a private island

Vejrø is approximately 2.6 km long. Part of the total area of 150 ha is farm land and part has been set aside. Approximately 1/3 of the area consists of beaches, lakes, wood, hedgerows, etc. which make Vejrø a very special and beautiful island. The flora and fauna is extremely rich, and the beaches of Vejrø are among the best and most clean sandy beaches of Denmark. The water is crystal-clear with an abundance of fish. During the summer the most important activity is the harbour/marina. The old farm "Skipperly", situated close to the harbour, has been converted into a tavern and a small shop. The airstrip which is approximately 600 m long can be used all the year round. In the autumn the hunting includes duck, pheasant and hare shooting. There is also a large and fine stock of roe-deer.

The history of Vejrø

can be traced back to the stone age, and is colourful and exciting. The first known owner of Vejrø is King Valdemar II in the 13th century. He is succeeded by a number of kings and counts. Circa year 1400 the island gave shelter to pirates, and as far as can be ascertained the island was not inhabited by farmers until the year 1568. The population of Vejrø reached its maximum in the 1920'es - 75 inhabitants - most of them farmers. At that time the island was divided into many small farms - quite a small community, including a grocer's shop, a dairy and a school. Since then there has been a decline of the population, farms were united, the number of owners continued to decrease, and today Vejrø is on one hand again as in the times of King Valdemar. Today only the graveyard and the houses of the island give evidence of the history of the island.

Hirsholmen

Very small island surrounded by nature sanctuary. Great Lighthouse, now remotely controlled. Many different seabirds and quite noisy herring gulls. Pets are not allowed. Only room for a few visitors. Smallest constituency in Denmark. First election results always obtained here. Only 13 voters. No provisions at all. Not even water.
