The span of the Viking ship construction was well demonstrated in the five Viking ships found at Skuldelev in Roskilde Fjord. The ships, which were no longer in service, had been filled with stones and scuttled by the mid1000s in order to close one of the lanes leading into the important commercial town of Roskilde. In 1962 a sheet piling was rammed down around the closure, the water was pumped out and the ships excavated. The five Skuldelev ships represent five different kinds of ship, two merchantmen, two warships and one ferry or fishing boat. The larger of the merchantmen was a hefty cargo vessel, 16.6 m long and 4.5 m abeam. It is probably the knarr type, an oceangoing freighter whose range included the North Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland and North America. The ship was built of fir, oak and lime. The building place may have been Norway as there was very little fir in Denmark during the Viking era. Its capacity was a cargo of 2025 tonnes and it was propelled by a rectangular sail of approx. 86 square metres. The smaller merchantman is an elegantly shaped oak vessel, l4 m long and 3.4 m abeam. The ship was wellsuited for navigation in the Danish waters and the Baltic Sea and its crew comprised four or five people. The sail must have measured 45 square metres, and the capacity was about five tonnes of goods.

The smaller of the Skuldelev warships is built of oak, ash and fir. Its length is 17.5 metres and beam 2.5 metres, accommodating 13 pairs of oars and a crew of about 30 warriors. Along the gunwale a shield strap held the shields of the crew in place.

The other warship found at Skuldelev is a long ship, approx. 30 metres in length and with a beam of 4.5 metres, with room for 30 pairs of oars and a crew of 60100 men. The ship is built of oak, and analyses of the wood have disclosed that it was probably built near Dublin in Ireland towards the end of the Viking age. The ship's rectangular sail measured about 150 square metres.

The fifth ship found at Skuldelev is a small freighter, l2 metres long, 2.5 metres abeam. It was built of fir planks and may have served as a fishing boat or a ferry.

Now work is drawing to a close in the final analysis of the shape and construction of the Skuldelev-ships. As the last of the five ships the hullform of Skuldelev 1, the sea-going cargoship, is currently being analysed in a work-model with the aim of providing evidence for the Skuldelev monograph to be printed in the seies Ships and Boats of the North.

Kignæs Havn

Kignæs Havn

Kignæs Harbour is a very cosy and very beautiful situated Yacht Harbour at "Roskilde Fjord" in the village "Jægerspris" in the northern part of Zealand in Denmark.

The harbour is situated direct at "Roskilde Fjord", just north of the bridge "Kronprins Frederiks Bro", which connects the town "Frederikssund" with "Horns Herred".

"Horns Herred" is a rather small peninsula situated between the two fjords, "Roskilde Fjord" and "Isefjord", with a number of interesting and cozy villages, a beautiful nature and a very popular holiday resort with a number of good yacht harbours, a youth hostel, some hotels and many summer houses.

For visitors to Kignæs Yacht Harbour, we will here give you a short introduction in English to our lovely and very beautifully situated Yacht Harbour "Kignæs Havn", and the two associations hosted by the harbour, the Sailing Club "Jægerspris Sejlklub" and the Boat Association "Bådelauget Kignæs Mole"

Guest Sailors are very welcome in Kignæs Harbour and available berths are marked with green signs. In addition to the permanent berths between the poles, there are a number of berths along the piers specially reserved for guest sailors. Furthermore the harbour master is very helpful in guiding guest sailors to the anticipated berth.

Kignæs Harbour has about 125 berths, with a width between the poles of 2 - 4 meters. The length of most berths are between 8 - 12 meters. In addition the harbour has a number of berths along the piers, specially reserved for guest sailors.

Stigsnæs

Located 7 km south of Skælskør has a small harbour from which there is ferry boat connections to Agersø and Omø. Agersøsund is very deep; and one of the reasons for building a power station and a refinery at this site, was that is was possible for heavy-draught vessels to unload coal and crude oil.

The parking lot at the harbour of Stigsnæs is the domicile of a bird station run by the Danish Ornithological Society. About 30.000 birds of prey and more than a million sparrows are crossing South-West Zealand at this point.

Stigsnæs Battery is located North of the parking lot. During the wars with Sweden in 1658 a canon battery was erected at this site. The battery, however, has since been destroyed. In 1808, the year after the British bombardment of Copenhagen, the battery was re-erected with equivalent batteries among other things on Agersø and Omø, armed with four canons, as part of the Danish coastal defence.

Reersø (spelled Reersoe in English), a small peninsular on the west coast of Sjælland (Zealand), at the Musholm Bay, about 100 kilometers west of Copenhagen.

The small local fishing harbour and marina is like a place where the world begins and ends. The modest village harbour offers facilities for pleasure boats, yachts and smaller fishing boats. Many tourists are coming by, for enjoying the rare atmosphere of the small rural harbour.

The length of the "island" is about 2 kilometers with only a few hundred permanent residents, but in the summer season we are visited by thousands of tourists.

The oldest part of the village is being preserved as national treasures as well as a great deal of the surrounding landscape. The small harbor functions as a marina for pleasure boats and small fishing vessels.

The island is in particular famous for its population of tail-less cats.

Sailing around Zealand

Sailing round Zealand is quite different. The distances between the ports are much longer. And the ports are typically big with an intense sail club activity. Go to Odden, buy yourself the biggest plaices in Denmark and enjoy the special atmosphere in the small fishing town.

In Gilleleje we meet the modern fishing-fleet side by side with the old smoke-houses. Maybe you will prefer going to Hornbaek - here there are many good-looking "chicks" and it is really great bathing and enjoying the sun here, - completely privately, in one of the many sand pits. Helsingör's Kronborg is worth a visit - but watch out for the Swedes ...they do eat Danes for breakfast!

In Öresund, the Sound, the ports are situated closely, side by side, all the way to Copenhagen. In Humlebaek you may visit the museum of Louisiana - a famous piece of culture of the North. You must see Christianshavn. You could stop at the Langelinie harbour not far from the Little Mermaid, and you should take a guided sightseeing round the harbour. Normally it is worth the money. The cafe’s and pubs of Nyhavn are also worth a visit, before you go to Tivoli in the evening.

Much poorer we continue the tour over Køge Bugt towards the Smålands-farvandet. On our way we pass Stevns Klint and later the impressive and beautiful Möns Klint. Also make sure that you see one of the typical Danish provincial towns on Lolland-Falster. And before you are on your way to Kerteminde, you should have a beer with an inhabitants from Omö or Agersö.

Agersø

11.11 E 55.12 N

It takes 15 minutes to reach Agersø by the ferry boat from the harbour of Stigsnæs. The island has 277 inhabitants, it is 3 km wide and 7 km long. It has an incredibly charming harbour with space for the ferry boat, fishing boats and yachts. An avenue lined with elm trees planted in 1770 leads from the busy harbour to the village with the village pond, the church, the shop and onwards to the inn. Agersø has a Dutch windmill which is open for visitors. On the Northern part of the island there are two summer house areas with delightful possibilities for swimming.

Omø

11.09 E 55.09 N

A small island located in The Great Belt 45 minutes by ferry boat from Stignæs harbour. Omø is 4.5 square kilometres with a 12 km coastline. The harbour has a ferry boat berth, a small harbour for fishing boats and a newly built marina. The inhabitants of Omø are very hospitable, the main trades on the island today are agriculture and fishery. The island has 172 inhabitants of whom the majority are living in Omø village or in the harbour site of Kirkehavn.

Omø has a varied bird life, and from Skovbakken, the highest point of the island, you can overlook the harbour, the village with the church, the lake, the bog and the light-house.

The overnight accommodations consist of Omø Perlen with cabins, Bed & Breakfast and a campsite

Glænø

Bird territory - especially ducks and waders -on Glænø Østerfed (east isthmus) and Vesterfed (west isthmus). There is admission to Glænø Vesterfed, where there is a parking place. With a pair of far-reaching binoculars, it is possible to view Holsteinsborg cove, from the dam. Here, mainly swans, ducks and many eagles, can be observed in winter. White-tailed eagles and golden eagles are seen frequently in this area. The cormorant sanctuary on Omø can be observed from the north coast of Glænø. In the high forest on the island, the golden oriole can be observed early in the breeding season.
