Approach
The approach to Hou starts in the straight of Hou Løb. Under normal conditions the current changes with the tide, but in strong winds the current will follow the direction of the wind and can run at speeds of up to 2 kn.
Follow the marked Hou Løb until you reach the fairway which begins between the green Duc D’albe, marked by a light (Fl.(3) G. 8 s) and the N buoy in the western part of the fairway.
The first basin you pass is the ferry terminal. This basin is reserved for the Samsø and Tunø ferries. The marina is situated in the W basin. There is also a smaller basin to the SW of the marina with a depth of 1.8-2.2 m.
In S winds, the water in the marina can be choppy. The harbour can be approached by day or by night in good visibility. Mooring alongside the quay or at berths with stern posts.

Hou Marina consists of two basins, the largest of which was constructed in the 1890s. The small marina to the W opened in 1987. The harbour originally belonged to the Master of the Royal Hunt, C.F.E. von Holstein-Rathlou, and was used for the shipping of crops, etc. In 1903, the Master gave the harbour to the fishermen of the town, who immediately set about extending and improving it. When fishing was at its height in 1934, there were about 35 fishing boats in Hou. Since then, fishing around Hou has also been in recession, and now there is only one working fishing boat in the harbour. Today, the harbour is owned by the County of Århus and the Municipality of Odder. Not far from the harbour, in Søndergade, are three shops for everyday goods - a baker, a butcher and a grocer. There is an extremely attractive beach just N of the ferry terminal.

The harbour master can arrange for a mobile crane (boats on trailers), repair work and the delivery of large quantities of fuel.
A larger crane (5 tonnes and over) can also be requested.

Nappedam Marina

tel 8637 2089

Approach
Nappedam Marina is situated at the far end of the cove of Egens Vig. If approaching the marina from the S, keep well clear of the marked “Skødshoved Flak”.
When approaching Egens Vig, always use the southern entrance to the cove. The fairway is marked with a fixed port mark and a port buoy. Steer directly towards the harbour light. The marina can be approached by day or by night in light weather and good visibility. Mooring is at berths with stern posts.

The members of Nappedam Yacht Club have developed the marina around the original pier. The pier was used by the Århus Steamship Service calling at ports around the Bay of Århus, as well as by small freight vessels carrying grain and fertilizer. In those days, Nappedam was the smallest commercial port in Denmark. King Christian X was fond of calling at Egens Vig in the Royal yacht “Dannebrog” and lying at anchor there. Occasionally the ship would moor at Nappedam pier. When visiting Nappedam today, it is difficult to imagine that such big ships used to moor here.
Today, Nappedam is a peaceful marina with beaches on both sides of the harbour. Directly opposite the marina is Ringelmose Woods with a number of marked nature trails.

"Good and large marina with all provisions nearby. Restaurant, Sail makers, Boat Yard, Chandler, Supermarket (5 min. walk). If you are going to visit Århus, the second largest city of Denmark, Egå marina is very convenient as home base because of the frequent public bus to Århus from the marina entry. 15-20 min by bus. If you have bikes onboard use Århus or Marselisborg instead.
You ought to spend a day or two visiting Århus (350.000 residents). Many attractions as well as shopping."

Approach
The marina is located in the northern basin of the port of Århus. Keep well clear of the merchant ship fairway until you are able to steer W towards the southern part of Riis Skov woods. Finally approach the harbour entrance on the coast towards SW.
The eastern part of the basin is reserved for yachts. A variety of clubs - rowing, scuba diving and punt shooting - occupy the western part of the harbour along with the working fishermen.
Mooring in the harbour is at berths with stern posts. The harbour can be approached by day or by night.

The harbour lies within walking distance of both the city centre and Riis Skov woods, one of the most popular areas for walkers and joggers in Århus. “Den Permanente”, a combined beach and bath house, is also close by, opposite the marina to the N, a few minutes’ walk away up the coast.
Århus Lystbådehavn was established in 1933. It has recently undergone renovation and now accommodates new hoisting facilities, a sports centre for dinghy sailors and mini-12 racing for the handicapped. No less than three yacht clubs and one motor yacht club have their club-houses at the marina. The slipway is situated at the far end of the harbour. There is a section reserved for old wooden vessels, and in the fishing harbour it is possible to buy freshly-caught and smoked fish.

Approach
Approach from S
The marina is situated due SW of Århus Østhavn. From the S, steer towards the cathedral.
Approach from E
Set a course towards the distinctive high-rise buildings right behind the marina. The harbour entrance can be found by following the coal pier (the E breakwater) towards the SW or by heading for the tower at the marina. The marina can be approached by day or by night. The end of the eastern pier is marked by a green light. Mooring is at pontoons with Y-shaped berth separators or at berths with stern posts.

Marselisborg Marina was opened in 1991. The buildings at the marina are well known for their architecture. The objective was to create a “coastal town”, one with an intimate and friendly atmosphere and where all activities centre around the sea. The marina has become the meeting point for a number of clubs involved in water sports activities such as, for example, Århus Water-skiing Club and three schools of navigation. Visiting sailors are welcome to participate in the activities taking place at the harbour.
Because of the lively atmosphere and the many restaurants, the marina has become popular with the people of Århus.

"Very nice and new marina with many visitors berths. A "Five star" excellent fish restaurant on the quay. Chandler, Pizzeria, other good restaurants etc. Popular walk place for the "Århus Citizens". It looks like the marina is centrally located to the Århus City, but in fact you will have to walk 2-3 kilometers to buy fresh milk, bread and alike.
Sometimes in the high season one of the marina shops can exhibit a small assortment of basic food stuff, sometimes nothing."

Norsminde

56º01.53' N 10º16.23' E

Real nice harbour (only 50 berths) in a great rural nature. Previously a fishing harbour and place of disembarkation. If your draft is greater than 2.0 m. or length more than 15 m., then stay out. The harbour is dredged every year because of silting up (mud and sand only). Take care of the strong tidal stream in the harbour. You will feel speed and direction when passing the light on the single breakwater.

[Tunö harbour]

Approach
From N:

Beware of the current in the belt between Tunø and Samsø which can run at speeds of up to 1.5 kn, causing considerable overfall.
Having passed the green light buoy NE of the shallows of Tunø Røn (not to be confused with the starboard buoy with top marker situated 1 nm further N), continue to steer S for a further 0.5 nm before approaching the harbour on a 265º true course.

Approach from S
From the S the harbour entrance may be approached on a 265º-350º true course.
The seaward approach to the harbour is marked by 4 buoys. Keep well clear of the southern pier, as sanding-up occurs.

Approach by night
Beware that at night it may be difficult to see the pier light when lights in the harbour are lit. In NE and E winds the harbour can be a bit choppy.
The ferry that sails between Hou and Tunø docks at the harbour, at the outermost part of the southern pier.
Yachts moor alongside the quay in the outer part of the harbour or at berths with stern posts.

Tunø is probably the most popular harbour for local sailors, and many visitors have also “discovered” the island. Despite the large number of visitors it has, however, kept its character.
There are only about 90 permanent residents on the island, which is so small that a walk around the shoreline only takes a couple of hours. The size of the island has also meant that there are no cars. All motorized transport takes place by tractor or scooter. Even the island ambulance, which is parked between the harbour and the village, is pulled by tractor in cases of emergency.
From the island’s church tower, which also serves as a lighthouse, there is a view of most of the Bay of Århus.
Right next to the harbour is an excellent beach.
In addition to the inn, there is a bar in what was formerly the dairy which is only open for the summer period. There is often live music at both venues.

"A beautiful small island all of the year, no cars at all. Harbour entry well marked on east coast. Good anchorage in the harbour bay in light westerly winds. Even the harbour can be choppy with strong wind between NE and SE. You will love it and come again whenever possible. In high season (July) it might be very crowded. A ferry comes twice a day, so avoid to berth at the ferry quay. Many sailors from the Århus region homebound after their summer cruise will spend their last holiday week on Tunø. Especially when they have kids. If you are passing the area, Tunø is a MUST."

Approach
The current along the W coast of Samsø can run at up to 1.5 kn.
The entrance lies in NNW direction and is marked by two starboard and two port buoys. It is recommended that you sail between the two buoys when approaching the harbour entrance. From here sail directly towards the entrance of the NE basin. The outside 9 m of the NE side of the middle pier is reserved for the post boat which calls at the harbour twice a day.
To enter the SE basin, change course immediately you are inside the end of the pier. Due to silting it is advisable to sail as close to the end of the pier as possible.
The harbour can be approached by day or by night in good visibility. Mooring in the harbour is either alongside jetties or at stern posts (note that there are not 2 posts per berth).

This small harbour, which was formerly a fishing harbour on the N side of the cove of Mårup Vig, is home to a few dinghies that are used by anglers. In addition to yachts, the harbour is used by the post boat.
Mårup is the closest harbour to northern Samsø’s magnificent countryside. Walk to the hills of Nordby Bakker and to the vantage point at Ballebjerg (64 m).
Nordby, the prettiest of Samsø’s towns with more than 100 picturesque timber-frame cottages, lies north of the harbour. The town is well worth a visit on account of the tranquil atmosphere and the many interesting architectural details and charming streets.

Langør Havn, Samsö

8305 Samsø
Tel 8659 6315

Approach
Approach from N
If approaching the harbour from the N, the fairway is marked from Kyholm Bo to Langør Havn. In strong winds the tidal current in the fairway can run at speeds of up to 2 kn.

Approach from S
The alternative approach to the harbour is through the marked “Lindholm Løb”, a very narrow fairway running close inshore. The current can be quite strong in the channel, up to 4 kn.
The harbour is not lit.

In 1995, readers of the boating magazine “Bådnyt” voted Langør Havn “Denmark’s best harbour” with regard to the surrounding countryside, service and the harbour scene.
Up until 1880, Langør was the most important harbour on Samsø. The friendly harbour is situated in Stavns Fjord, which is a nature reserve.

The island of Kyholm, E of Langør, has served several purposes: as a “pesthouse” for Jutland during the plague of 1709-12, as a fortified base during the war with England 1801-15 and as a quarantine station during the cholera epidemic 1832-57. During the war with England 400 soldiers were entrenched on Kyholm, with 27 cannon to defend the harbour which, in those days, was a port of refuge for the privateers. Langør was already an important naval port in Viking times. W of Langør one can still see the remains of Kanhavekanalen, a 500 m long, 11 m wide canal dug to allow the Viking fleet to be moved from the W coast to the E coast of the island.

There is a child-friendly beach and many footpaths in the area.

"Outside the harbour is a protected anchorage. The marina itself is OK, and you are placed in the middle of a great nature reserve with a great history as well. "Kanhave" channel is now dry, but was used and was built by the Vikings. The channel runs through the island where it is most narrow. Same remarks as for Mårup on other issues."

Approach
Approaching the harbour is straightforward. The big silos on the quay make a good landmark.
The harbour can be approached by day or by night.
In the harbour, most boats moor alongside the quays, but there are also a number of berths with stern posts. In the inner harbour, a 28 m long jetty has been built out from the southern harbour wall. This jetty is reserved for the vessels M/F Gråsælen and M/S Jane.

The harbour was originally used by fishing boats, ferries and commercial vessels, but today the main basin is completely dominated by sailing boats in the summer. Now, only the basin at the far end is reserved for fishing vessels.
There is a lively summertime atmosphere in the town and many small shops and restaurants.
Den gamle Købmandsgård in Ballen has been restored and is open to the public. It contains a small museum about the island of Kyholm.
There is an old lime kiln, dating back to 1832, at the harbour.
On the quayside you will find Dokken, an interesting restaurant situated on the site of the old slipway.

"A popular harbour with much atmosphere and (over) crowded during the high season. One reason could be the strategic location of this place, directly on the North-South going "Highway" for many yachts on the Baltic coast. Around the harbour a real "holiday life" area is found. A live music-restaurant of proper quality is found as well.
I like the harbour a lot, but not in the high season. I like it best in the Whit sun holiday, when nearly all Danish yachts are cruising around."

This "banana" shaped island has a very small harbour built at the end of a long dam. The island itself is a nice place, with very special nature at the N-end. Late afternoon you will meet a lot of wild rabbits crossing the walkway along the coast. When approaching Endelave from the North, you will often see on your starboard side a lot of Seals, in the protected sanctuary "Møllegrunden". If the sea is calm, you will very often see "Porpoises" (a 1.5 m. Whale). They are not Dolphins, but still an attraction in Denmark.

Snaptun harbour is the port from which ferries to the islands of Endelave and Hjarnø depart. The marina is visited by pleasure boats from Denmark and abroad, and is full of life all day long.

The woodlands and beaches of the lovely countryside surrounding Snaptun are perfect for horseback riding, and there are plenty of opportunities for sport fishing from the beach.

"Nice but small marina and an active fishing harbour just beside the marina. Between the two harbours a ferry berth.
Two small ferries are servicing the island "Endelave" as well as the island "Hjarnø". Take the walkway along the coast to the beech wood
forest. You will enjoy it."

Approach
Approaching the harbour is simple. In daytime, the old windmill on the hills NE of the harbour is a prominent landmark. Beware of the current outside the harbour entrance which can run at speeds of up to 1.5 kn.
The middle pier is reserved for ferries, and the N basin is used primarily by merchant ships. The harbour can be choppy in W winds. It is recommended that you moor as far back as possible in the S basin.
The harbour basin has been deepened to a minimum depth of 4 m throughout. The harbour can be approached by day or by night.
Mooring is at berths with stern posts or alongside the quay.

A steamship service used to run between Copenhagen and Kolby. Today the ferry will dock in the harbour whereas in the days of the steamships the arrival at Samsø could be a risky undertaking. Passengers were, in fact, transported by rowing boat into land.
A summer guest, who took the ferry to Kolby Kås in 1873, advised anybody intending to visit Samsø in future “..to wear a cork belt or take a couple of hog’s bladders which could be fastened to the back with twine..", at the time of disembarkation. Actually, the steamship ought to be equipped with such devices for the prevention of drowning” (as printed in the local newspaper Samsø Avis og Avertissementstidende on 16 September 1873).
Kolby Kås is often the first port of call for those approaching the area from the S as it is easy to enter at night.
A commercial harbour and ferry port, the harbour is functional and offers good facilities.

An "inland marina" in and around a holiday resort built on 7 artificial islands. Long entrance channel with a single lock (1 m. lift). Always plenty of space due to the capacity of the lock. They cannot fill the marina with boats before people want to leave again. Waiting time by experience max. 15 minutes. If you have children onboard, they will love you if you visit this place. I like it for a day or two. Very often a real good cozy atmosphere due to the family houses in this resort. Very little provisions available due to bankruptcy of several shops in the center.

The marina is situated about 6.5 nm N of Århus. The entrance is 0.5 nm S of the Studstrupværket power station with its 200 m high chimney. Keep well clear of the marked shallow “Skødshoved Flak”.
The harbour can be approached by day or by night.
Mooring is at berths with stern posts although it is also possible to moor alongside the pier heads.

Even though Kaløvig Marina is relatively large and modern, it has a friendly atmosphere. It is divided up into small sections by an island in the middle of the lagoon.
Part of the marina has been set aside for anglers, with small tool sheds and smoking ovens.
The marina has at its disposal 6 wooden huts, each with 8 beds, which are let out.
In addition, the marina is the training centre for Team Denmark, so many regattas are held here.
Apart from the fact that the chimney of the Studstrupværket power station is the most prominent landmark in the area, the plant was the first company in Denmark to build a desulphurisation plant for purification of the flue gases. Most of what comes out of the chimney is simply vapor.
