Læsö

11.01 E 57.16 N at the center of the island

This 114 square kilometer island is situated in the middle of the Cattegat and is thus only accessible by sea or by air. The island is, however, well worth a visit as it consists of beautiful areas of nature; the sky is clear, the air is refreshing and the quiet of the night is only broken by the sounds of nature.

Some holidaymakers might find that life on Læsø is too simple and quiet; there are no large hotels with night clubs and neon signs and there is not even one single traffic light on the whole of the island. However, once you have visited the island you cannot help but get attracted by the calm and relaxed attitude of the inhabitants of Læsø; only very few visitors decide not to return to Læsø once they have experienced the wonderful atmosphere of the island.

On Læsø we produce our own salt and make roofs with seaweed. We take pride in serving fresh fish and Norway lobsters and enjoy a game of golf with the visitors of the island on one of Denmark’s most beautiful golf courses situated very close to the sea.

You can travel to Læsø from Frederikshavn by the new Læsø ferry in an hour and a half. This journey is actually very comfortable and gives you a lovely start to your holiday.

Østerby and Vesterø, ports with a cozy atmosphere

Experiencing the flavor of Læsø’s two harbour towns, Østerby and Vesterø, is a must.

The character of Vesterø is influenced by the arrival and departure of the Læsø ferry. However, the fishing fleet of some twenty boats and the many pleasure craft that visit the harbour throughout the season also contribute to this atmosphere. The view from the Havnebakken offers an exciting spectacle - the buzz of working- and recreational life.

In Østerby you will find the largest fishing fleet, consisting of about forty vessels. This is where the main part of Læsø’s fish and Norway lobsters are landed, and this where you will find the headquarters of Læsø Fiskeindustri (‘Læsø Fishing Industry’). The standard number of boats the harbour can take has been set at 220 vessels - however, some periods have seen the harbour take as much as 400 craft.

Both harbours have top-class service facilities, including toilets, shower cabins, nurseries and coin-operated laundries. They are completed by good shopping facilities and exiting restaurants, at which, of course, the fish specials of Læsø are on the menu.
