In 1154, when the Arab geographer al-Idrisi made his world map in Palermo in Sicily, he included Horsens among the Danish towns, and called it "a small beautiful town".

Vikings
Beautiful the city still is, and its history is long, eventful and exciting.
The first inhabitants were Vikings who settled in the tenth century at the head of the fjord. In the streets Borgergade and Søndergade archaeologists have found the remains of houses, workshops, and some distance from the settled area, the related heathen burial site.

Beautifully located in the Green Lagoon area, on the shores of one of the loveliest fjords in Denmark, Horsens is a particularly attractive place to visit. And as a holiday resort, Horsens is truly a town of opportunity, offering a wealth of activities and cultural attractions.

Horsens has an exciting history stretching back more than 1,000 years and is known as the ‘town of museums’, with good reason.

The countryside of the Green Lagoon area is also unique, featuring the two highest hills in Denmark. A well-planned network of cycle paths and hiking trails makes it easy to explore the entire region.

IBygningn the fjord are the delightful islands of Hjarnø, Vorsö and Alrö. And just outside the fjord is the idyllic island of  Endelave and its special kind of peace and quiet.

In the summer, the Green Lagoon provides excellent swimming in the clean water off the white beaches of Juelsminde. Onshore fishing and angling in the region’s streams or lakes are also popular. There are plenty of opportunities for sailing and windsurfing, as well as ‘dry land’ activities such as golf, squash, tennis and ten-pin bowling.

Horsens town center is dotted with marvelous architecture, and impressive, half-timbered merchants’ houses. The town center contains a network of charming, narrow alleys as well as the widest and most attractive pedestrian street in Northern Europe.

GågadeIf you’re hungry or thirsty, or are looking for entertainment in the evenings, there is no shortage of places to go. There are numerous excellent restaurants, exciting cafés, cozy bars and good discotheques, as well as a varied program of top class cultural events at Horsens Ny Teater.

In short, the Green Lagoon area is the ideal place for anyone looking for an active holiday and cultural treats. And you can be sure that you will be met with the famous Danish warmth and hospitality wherever you go!
