Hornbæk |
Around 100 years ago, many well-known Danish artists such as Drachmann and Krøyer discovered, what was then a small fishing hamlet of Hornbæk with its´ beautiful beaches and surroundings. Their paintings brought Hornbæk to the attention of well-to-do Copenhageners, who began building their summer houses in Hornbæk.
Many of the imposing houses are still standing and bear witness to the time when Hornbæk was the fashionable place for the bourgeois. Today Hornbæk is not only a favourite holiday spot for Danes, more and more people from all over the world also find their way here. Through the years Hornbæk has safeguarded its´ idyllic Danish character and has every intention of continuing to do so. With a permanent population of around 5000 during the winter months and about 50.000 visitors during the summer, the face of Hornbæk changes with the seasons - going from the mostly cosy indoor life to the hustle and bustle of the spring and summer.
Without doubt, Hornbæk´s greatest attraction is its´ kilometre long superb child-friendly beach, with ever watchful lifeguards. Among other attractions is the modern yachting harbour, where anglers have taken-over from the old-time fishermen and local cutters arrange fishing trips and company outings etc. There is also the charming old fishing hamlet and the church dating back to 1737. For many guests, Hornbæk is also the starting point for trips to a number of exciting places of interest in and around Copenhagen and for captivating walks and cycle rides around North Zealand. There are good bus and train connections with Helsingør/Helsingborg and Copenhagen, so you can enjoy your holiday in Hornbæk without having to worry about a car.
