Bornholm is the only cliff island in Denmark. This makes for excellent harbours. Bornholm's location in the middle of the Baltic Sea, 15 degrees east in longitude and 55 degrees north in latitude, makes the island an ideal base for a sailing holiday. From Bornholm many regions are within reach; Christiansø, the eastern coast of Sweden, the Baltic States, Åland and the Gulf of Finland. Bornholm and Christiansø offer more than 20 harbours.

[Bornholm map]

Everything from the major harbours in Rønne and Nexø with fishing vessels and ferries, to all the little harbours to the north of Rønne, past Hammerknuden and south to Snogebæk. In the hinterland, within walking distance, there is scope for experiences and activities that will contribute to a holiday atmosphere. At the Bornholm Visitor Centre, a sailing guide can be obtained, with a description of each individual harbour and its facilities. Click on the harbour below and get the necessary facts and a map presenting the port in detail.

[Svaneke]

[Svaneke]

Fishing harbour. 30 berths. Outer harbour gets rough during onshore winds. Local boats have right of priority in inner harbour. The harbour gate between the inner and outer harbours is closed during strong onshore winds.

May be entered day and night, allowances being made for wind, current and visibility. Should not be entered during onshore winds. Compass variation occurs, and strong currents coupled with bad visibility can be dangerous.

Svaneke Lighthouse is located on Sandkås Odde and will guide boats in during approach. Steer to the north in the white angle of the harbour light until the harbour's leading lights guide the boat in at 297 degrees.

BE CAREFUL: If approach is made from due east of the leading lights, boats are led through the skerries at Mågeflak SE of the harbour. Approach is prohibited if
a black ball is displayed or 3 vertical red lights are shining on the mast north of the harbour. The harbour gate to the inner harbour is closed if a fixed white light is shining under the lower light of the leading lights. The current in the approach channel is rarely important.

I my opinion this is the nicest harbour in Bornholm. Town is so small and therefore intimate.

[Gudhjem south]

The Port of Gudhjem consists of 2 harbours: Nörresand harbour (North) with a water depth of 3.6 metres and Gudhjem Harbour (South). Applicable to both harbours: May be entered day and night, allowances being made for wind, current and visibility.
Hammerodde, Christiansø and Svaneke lighthouses will guide boats in during approach. In SW-ly winds, a hard current can set toward Sandhammaren on the SE point of Scania (southern Sweden).
In strong NW wind, a strong current sets to the southward at Hammeren. Gudhjem Harbour (S): The Harbour's light beacons line up to guide boats in at 202 degrees and are turned off whenever the harbour is unnavigable.

In daylight this is shown by a red ball on the flagpole on the north breakwater.

This harbour is also very nice. This town is bigger than Svaneke and has more tourists. If you enjoy a busier city, then this is the harbour to choose.

Hammerhavn

tel +45 56480075 Hammer Harbour is beautifully located with a splendid view of the Hammershus Castle Ruins, there is no town and no facilities, but the nature is magnificent.

The harbour can be entered during all wind conditions. The harbour has WC's, telephone, shower facilities, as well as a kiosk for shopping.

In summer months, private boat trips depart from Hammer Harbour on daily sightseeing tours along the coast. A leading light provides a bearing in bad visibility. Electricity and water on the quays for use by pleasure craft.

Bornholm's largest commercial and ferry harbour. Visiting boats are welcome in the Søndre Boat Harbour and the south harbour. May be entered day and night, allowance being made for wind, current and visibility. Compass variation can occur, and strong currents coupled with bad visibility can be dangerous. The approach to the harbour is guided by lining up the red/white light and the whistle buoy 1.4 nautical miles WSW of the harbour. The harbour's lead-ing light guides boats in at 64.5 degrees. The lights on the breakwaters are synchronised and are turned on in daytime when visibility is bad. Fog horn: 1 signal every 20 seconds between 06.00 and 24.00. In calm weather, a gentle surface current in the Baltic Sea sets around Bornholm in a WSW-ly direction toward the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. In SW wind the current sets to the northward in the approach channels and in WN-ly wind the current sets to the southward in the approach channels. Strong onshore winds cause choppy and unpleasant seas. Pound nets and other fishing equipment north of the harbour. Speed limit: 5 knots. Pleasure craft may only use the dredged channel when entering the harbour. Ferry traffic always has right of priority. Visiting boats are kindly requested to dock at Nørrekås Lystbådhavn (Marina) if space is available.

This is the major city in Bornholm. It's a good place to go shopping but the harbour is meant for commercial shipping and therefore it's not the nicest harbour for yachts.

Fortress and naval harbour from the 1600's. 60 berths. Good emergency harbour during a fresh gale, but not from the south. Visiting boats may swing anchor to the north of the swing bridge across the harbour.
Large boats should moor along the quay on the east side. The harbour should be entered with care day and night, allowances being made for wind, current and visibility. Compass variation can occur and strong current coupled with bad visibility can be dangerous.

If a black ball or three vertical red lights are displayed/ shining on a mast on the south side of Frederiksø Island, it means that the harbour cannot be entered due to rough seas or because all berths are occupied

The harbour entrance is too narrow for sailing manoeuvres.
Speed limit: 3 knots. Anchoring prohibited.

A beautiful small island. During the day many tourists come by boat but leave in the late afternoon. In the evening a walk around the island is extremely peaceful - it's just yourself and the seagulls. 125 people live on the island.
