Zlarin Island

Zlarin Island (population 400) lies directly at the mouth of the Krka estuary. It has been praised for the beauty of its terrain, and in earlier times was also called the "Golden Island" (zlato means "gold"). Compared with the other islands of the archipelago, Zlarin has the largest variety of tourist facilities.

The town of Zlarin developed beside a deep bay; along the quay runs a pretty promenade adorned by palm trees and houses in late Gothic style. The only hotel, near the harbor basin, is called Hotel Koralj. Its name points to the special characteristic of the island: Zlarin was the only island in this region which was surroanded by waters rich in coral. Unfortunately, not much is left of this splendor. Only the Koraljski muzej (Coral Museum) shows the magnificence of what once was, although it looks more like a souvenir shop. Zlarin is the destination of many excursion boats.
