Zirje Island

The biggest island of the Sibenik archipelago, Zirje, is also the farthest away from the mainland. Its 15 square kilometers offer ample opportunities for long walks, and its coast has lots of beautiful coves where swimming and sunbathing are especially delightful. Two parallel rows of hills run along Zirje Island with a fertile valley stretched between them. Grapevines, olives and fruit grow in abandance. The name of the island originates from zir (acorn), indicating that the island probably used to be covered in oak forests.

The ferry docks in Murna, on the north side of the island. A footpath leads from there up to the higher-lying village of Zirje, which was probably inhabited as early as prehistoric times. Near Velika Stupica, in the east of the island, the remains of a fortress from late antiquity were found. A road running along the valley connects Zirje and Velika Stupica. By foot, this takes 45 minutes. Near Velika Stupica, pretty rock and pebble beaches and untouched bays beckon, with only the occasional boat to distract you.
