Vrgada is one of the most beautiful islands in this region. The pine forests, sandy beaches and quiet coves can provide peace and relaxation for everyone. It is the island of sailors and fishermen.

Vrgada was an important fort in the time of the byzantine empire. It remained an important stronghold at the entrance of Pasman channel all the way through the middle ages and later. The remains of the fort, now called "gradina" are still visible. There are two churches on the island: The church of st. Andrew was a parochial church till late 17th century. The church on the hill, of The Holly Trinity, was erected in 1696. Vrgada had Venetian rulers called "konte" from the 14th century till 17th. The remains of their palace are still visible. There is an interesting story connected to the departure of the last "konte"; when he was leaving Vrgada for good, he packed the old painting of the Madonna with the child with him. But when he wanted to sail away, the strong wind prevented him from leaving. The same thing happpened the second time so he decided to return the painting to the chappel. When that was done, he was able to leave Vrgada.

Today, Vrgada is still an island of fishermen and sailors. People are also working in tourism. There are several houses that offer accommodations and there are couple of good restaurants. The island is connnected to the mainland by a small boat service that goes to Biograd and back three times a day. The other side of the island is well known for beautiful beaches and inlets. Most of the island is covered with pine forests and mediterranean schrubs.
