Umag

Umag is the center of a 20kilometer-long stretch of coastline that is especially devoted to tourism. To give you an idea, in Croatia it holds third rank for the number of overnight stays. In Roman times, the settlement of Dmacus occupied this flat peninsula. Despite all the upheavals throughout its history, it never changed in one respect: it has always been the biggest port for the export of Istrian wine.

Umag has an attractive old town with narrow streets and houses from various epochs. The coast from Kap Savudrija to Dajla is full of pretty bays, and it was perhaps unavoidable that Umag would become a tourist haven with more than 50,000 inexpensive hotel beds. Holiday resorts and camping sites line the coast right up to Savudrija in the north.
