Rijeka is a Mediterranean and Central European city. Situated along the coast of the Kvarner Bay, the most northern part of the Adriatic Sea at the point where the Mediterranean Sea has made its deepest incision into the Continent of Europe. That is why this area is considered as a boundary dividing the sea and land traffic and trade routes. This geographical and political location made this areas a battle-field of different historical events which defined its econimic development substantially.
Rijeka is an important governing, administrative econimic, university, fair, business and cultural center of the whole area. Today it has 160,000 inhabitants (with its metropolitan area 206,000) of which 70% goes to those of Croatian nationality. But, Rijeka is a city with many other ethnic entities living together. A special importance is given to the Italian minority, the language and cultural of which have been cultivated on this area for many centuries. All the inhabitants are mutually linked together to a great extend, while the differences among ethnic affiliations result in positive and creative scopes of their total activities.
