Lopud

Lopud is an island, located 7,5 NM from Dubrovnik. Delaphodia is the ancient Greek name for the island. Central island of the Elaphite chain, Lopud boasts a rich maritime tradition, especially during the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. Lopud's galleys participated in Spanish raids on Tunis, Algeria, Portugal and even in the Armada campaign against England.

The first traces of human Iife go back into ancient history. A domain of the Dubrovnik Republic from the 11th century.

The gorgeous Cove of Sunj, accessible by a 1 km long footpath is overlooked by the Church of Our Lady of Sunj, with a cemetery (also with a fine collection of art)

.

The quiet and secluded island of Lopud lies just off the Dubrovnik coast and offers the sort of welcome that will make you want to return again and again.

Warm and sunny, yet soothed by gentle Adriatic breezes, the island has two main bays, one facing the mainland, which contains Lopud, the only village and harbour on the island. The other bay, facing the open sea, is reserved for naturists and just along from the sandy beach lies Lopud village, which is wonderfully relaxing, with a wide promenade, a botanical garden, a profusion of flowering shrubs and trees, and a number of small bars and cafes.

Good anchorage, especially for bigger yachts, off the E coast (depth 20-40 m).

Facilities: Post office and medical service. Provisions and water.
