Ilovik Island

Down south from the Lošinj Island we find a group of small islands. The biggest island in this group is Ilovik. Settlement was started as an agricultural and fishing centre. There are many water wells, and the island is famous for its flowers. A tight passage separates Ilovik from the small island of St. Peter that was a centre of a Benedictine abbey of Sanctus Petrus de Nembis, whose monks were the owners of fields and vineyards on the Ilovik Island. People lived here back in the Bronze Age, and from the remains of the "villa rustica", they continued to live here in the Roman times. The fisherman and nautical tourists use this channel between the two islands like a harbour during the summer months. There are a lot of small islands northeast of the Ilovik Island. Just to mention a few Vele Orjule, Male Orjule, Oruda. Closer to the Cres Island we find a sea cliff called Trstenik and further north the one called Plavnik. Opposite Martinšcica bay lies the Zeca Island. This small island covered with thick Mediterranean macchia is favourite spot for one-day swimming excursions.
