Koh Kong |
Koh Kong is a 'great' place.
Koh Kong City is the town you pass through on the way to or from Thailand. Fishing village/border town, Koh Kong is worth at least an overnight look. There is an interesting waterfront and a bit of nightlife including a casino on the border.
We have never been to a town (village) that could be so easily walked around. Koh Kong has so much to see and do; do, islands, river, nature tours and a nightlife as well. Your stay here will be economical as lodging, food and transportation is so cheap here. Make this place a stop on your travels and you won't be disappointed.
Many problems with Cambodian officials extorting money from tourists coming across from Thailand have been reported. The visa application form & the entry/departure form are free DON'T pay for them. They are charging 100 Baht if you do not have a photo for the visa form & 50 to 100 Baht if you don't have an International Quarantine Booklet which is only required of citizens of a few countries. If necessary, make a complaint to the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok #66-38-2-254-6630, the main Immigration Dept & the Ministry of Tourism.
Hotel & Guest House Information
There are only four real hotels here, the rest are guesthouses. A guesthouse has simple and basic rooms, most have Asian style (squat) bathrooms inside the room and the average price is 150 Baht for fan and 250 Baht with air-con. Some hotels have no-bathroom rooms for 100 Baht.
NOTE: The first time you get here the motorcycle taxi's will try to overcharge you. The real rate is 500 Riel or 5 Baht per ride. If you use them to find a hotel your hotel rate will go up by 50 Baht as they will expect a commission from the hotel. Better to walk to the hotel if you can or get let off a block or two before.

Restaurant & Dining Information
There are many small restaurants and places to eat. The only two we would recommend is Otto's Restaurant, Rooms and Meeting Place & the Foreigner Food Restaurant (But don't order any beef meal here, Otto's can be trusted). It seems the larger restaurants have cook book cut-outs for their menus with no prices listed. You will be charged according to what you look like and the restaurant owners mood at the time. We decided to passover these so called business people.Koh Kong Nightlife
This "Village" does not sleep. There is an active nightlife. A few Karaoke clubs within town and a "Red Zone" is located 4 km south east of the traffic circle (take a taxi). Massage is traditional style in small shops. Many stay up all night in the small restaurants which all serve drinks as well as food. Note: The new Casino is at the "Koh Kong International Resort club" located on the Hat Lek side of the river, not in Koh Kong town. Small boats and a taxi (motorbike or car) on the other side are available for small fees to get you there and back.
