Kampot

Kampot is a very pleasant little city full of French colonial character. It is a seaport on the Phnom Penh–Kompong Som RR and the center of the Cambodian pepper culture. Several agricultural projects were set up in Kampot after 1975.

The pretty riverine town is just five kilometers from the sea and serves the very popular seaside resort of Kep. Once a fashionable haunt of the French elite, it was known as La Perle de la Cote d' Agathe and has stunning offshore islands and a beautiful bay, King Sihanouk owned one of these islands and would often use it for entertaining.  This region is famous for its production of durian, the foul smelling fruit, and reputedly has the best seafood in the country.
