Sao Jorge Island longitude 28º 33' W  - latitude 38º 24' N

The island is edged with cliffs, covered with exuberant vegetation, reaching down to the sea. Velas is the main town on the island. It is a fishing port and lies near the airport. There are manor-houses here as well as the Sao Jorge Church, with 1 7th-century paintings and the Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Church, with gilded wood carvings.

São Jorge is situated in the same group of islands as Faial and Pico. The size is about 56 x 8 km. Here lives about 10.300 people.

São Jorge must be your second choice, if you visit Azores for the very first time. There are several places with beautiful nature, which inspire to long walks in the countryside. São Jorge is well known for the cheese. There are no beaches on this island.

It is possible to take a ferry from São Jorge to Faial, Pico and Terceira. The ferry to Pico and Faial is regular, but the ferry towards Terceira can be canceled because of heavy waves. The airport is close to Velas.

One of the most beautiful walks goes from the main road with decent of 600 meters to Faja Da Caldeira. During the decent it's possible to take a " shower " under the waterfalls. Go further along the coast to Faja dos Cubles. The walk takes about 3-5 hours incl. some breaks. The view's are breathtaking.

I have stayed at 'Residencial Neto' in Velas, A nice place, with at small pool. They will take you to the airport by minibus for free.
