Pico Island longitude 28º 20' W - latitude 38º 30' N |
Everything on the island is large. Its mountain which rises up from the sea to touch the sky. Its sperm whales which are on view for the tourists. Men with Herculean strength transform the dark lava into houses, vineyards, and tilled fields. Visiting Pico is like entering a world in miniature built up over centuries by whalers, farmers and fishermen. For a holiday of many contrasts, from the slopes of old volcanoes, the taste of fresh sweet figs and grapes to the enchanting panoramic views and snug villages overlooking the sea. The green of the vines embellishing the black of the basalt. Delicate hands weaving a web of transparent lace. Places recalling the deeds of the whales who voyaged over the seven seas. The dark and dramatic blotches of the "mistérios" or lava formations. The great pleasure of wine once enjoyed by the Czars. The charm of small lagoons surrounded by vegetation. That is what Pico is like: a mountain that suddenly rises upon the horizon of the sea.
The ferry for Pico leaves from Horta several times during the day. There are also ferries to Sao Jorge and Terceira.
