St Anne, the quaint capital, is the centre for Alderney's population. With its cobbled streets, picturesque cottages and inviting restaurants and pubs, it is located slightly to NW of the centre of the island on high ground. St Annel, is a tumble of narrow cobbled streets flanked by
colour-washed cottages and town houses. Victoria Street hosts a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants, along with banking and post office services. The church is one of the finest in the Channel Islands and the island hall still retains the dignity of its former role, as Government House. The town's museum paints a dramatic picture of an island steeped in military history, which earned it the sobriquet "Gibraltar of the Channel"
